Road Presents Biggest Hurdle

Lamar Odom had this to say after the Clippers rallied from 13 points down Sunday to defeat the Detroit Pistons, 82-77:

“Toward the end, I thought we played well. We played our game. We got the win and that was all that mattered. I’m proud of this team. The way we fought back is very important.”

That’s the attitude all the Clippers may need if they are to win on the road this season. So far, they are winless in six away games, including Friday’s loss to the Lakers at Staples Center, where the Clippers were designated as the visiting team.

The Clippers have played 18 home games, almost half their season total of 41, in their first 24 games. Tonight’s game against the Suns at Phoenix is only the Clippers’ seventh on the road.

The rest of the season features far more games away from Staples and the Clippers must win at least a few on the road to remain in playoff contention.

Center Michael Olowokandi failed to score Sunday against Detroit and is averaging a modest 5.8 points this season. But Coach Alvin Gentry continues to praise Olowokandi for other aspects of his game.

“Michael has played great,” Gentry said. “I don’t think you can judge his game on stats alone because of what else he does for our team. He’s doing a great job of blocking shots and getting good rebounding position.”

Olowokandi had a career-best 13 rebounds Sunday, raising his average to 7.7. He also is averaging 2.2 blocks.
