From Times Wire Reports

Firefighters in New York City have all but defeated the stubborn underground fires that have burned beneath the World Trade Center ruins for more than three months, officials said.

However, small hot pockets continue to be discovered and a firetruck remains on standby at the site, Fire Battalion Chief Brian Dixon said. The department still considers the site an active fire scene, he said.

Gov. George Pataki earlier told a group of about 50 elected state officials during a tour of the disaster site that the fires had been extinguished.
