all day Movies

Not exactly Christmas movies, but holiday favorites nonetheless, “The Wizard of Oz” and “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” make for a toe-tapping family-oriented double bill at the New Beverly. Both are based on classic children’s books--”Oz” was written by L. Frank Baum; Roald Dahl wrote “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” on which “Wonka” was based--and enhanced with fanciful design and memorable songs. Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Billie Burke and Margaret Hamilton star on and off the Yellow Brick Road. Gene Wilder, Jack Albertson and Peter Ostrum headline at the “Chocolate Factory.” The perfect gift for kids of all ages.

5pm Mariachi

Why shouldn’t the sounds of the season include 14 orchestrated mariachi guitars? For the annual program “Merry-achi Christmas,” headlining are Jose Hernandez and his group Sol de Mexico, who have made it their mission to keep mariachi alive in U.S. concert halls despite little attention to the genre from radio or record companies. The 40-member troupe Ballet Folklorico del Pacifico, which has a similar cultural preservation goal for theatrical dance, performs as well. And mixing things up a bit: the quite nontraditional all-female Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, who have riled purists but won over crowds.

“Merry-achi Christmas,” Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, 12700 Center Court Drive, Cerritos. 5 p.m. $42 to $52. (800) 300-4345.
