Beginning in January, the U.S. Forest Service will change its Adventure Pass program to offer free access to Los Padres National Forest on the last Saturday of each month.

Previously, free access has been linked to public service dates, such as Earth Day and Arbor Day.

The Adventure Pass, which costs $5 per day or $30 a year, is required of visitors who park their vehicles within the Los Padres, Angeles, Cleveland and San Bernardino national forests.

The money helps pay for maintenance of campgrounds, trails, restrooms and other facilities.

“We’re hoping this change will make it easier for visitors to remember the dates and take advantage of the program,” said Los Padres National Forest supervisor Jeanine Derby.
