Furnishing That Castle Without Having to Sell the Crown Jewels

A 6,800-square-foot warehouse in the San Fernando Valley filled with pieces from show homes and photo shoots offers high-end, estate-size furnishings at prices substantially below retail.

Designer Interiors Warehouse is not where you go for sleeper sofas, recliners or furniture for a kid’s room, but for ultra-luxurious pieces, generally large. For high-end entertaining, a dining room group with a wheat-toned crackle finish and a pedestal table, eight upholstered chairs (two with arms), a china buffet and a sideboard commands about $12,000 at some stores, but at Designer Interiors it’s $5,990.

A round glass pedestal table and four chairs, all trimmed with wrought-iron swans, go for $1,090, or about $900 less than the list price.

There are many large overstuffed upholstered pieces. A rolled-arm sofa and love seat filled with feather and down is $2,690 for both pieces, about $4,000 less than retail.

For high-end accessories at down-to-earth prices, I have rarely found any source as good as this. The wall hangings, pictures and frames are elegant and unique. They range from $190 to $1,200.

Some pedestals that come in three sizes--40, 44 and 48 inches--with stone or inlaid tops for $375 are a good buy when you know that they retail for about $800. Because the prices are so much lower than retail, the manufacturers’ tags have been removed, but decorators know and represent a large part of the clientele.

This is not the kind of store where you can order anything from the floor. It’s wise to pounce on a favorite find while it’s still there.
