Security Guard Accidentally Run Over, Killed

A security guard was killed at an Irvine food manufacturing plant Friday after being struck by a tractor-trailer truck and run over by its rear tires, police said.

The guard for the Maruchan facility was walking on a median between trucks entering and leaving the plant at 15800 Laguna Canyon Road when he was hit, Irvine police said.

An incoming tractor-trailer had partly passed by the guard, but he was hit by the truck’s trailer portion.

The 40-year-old guard suffered head injuries and died at the scene, investigators said. The exact cause of death has not been determined.

“It was totally an accident,” said Supervising Deputy Coroner Joseph Luckey at the Orange County coroner’s office.

The truck driver, a 33-year-old Riverside resident, did not even realize he had hit the guard until he had pulled into the plant, Luckey said.

Irvine police did not release the guard’s name Friday pending notification of relatives.

Witnesses to the accident are asked to contact Irvine Police Investigator Doug Coffing at (949) 724-7024.
