An Oxnard bicyclist was killed before dawn Saturday when a car struck him from behind, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Manuel Rios, 53, was hit while riding without a helmet east on 5th Street near Las Posas Road at 5:35 a.m., authorities said.

Kim Jung Sook, 69, of Oxnard, was driving 45 mph on her way to church when her car struck Rios, CHP Officer Monica Lopez said.

“She had no idea what she hit at all, so she left the scene and then returned to the scene because there was damage to her vehicle,” Lopez said.

The woman was not drinking, Lopez said.

Lopez said the road did not have a shoulder, only dirt with an embankment behind it.

Rios was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be conducted today, according to the Ventura County coroner’s office.
