Council OKs Plan to Cut Energy Use 10%
The City Council voted to surpass Gov. Gray Davis’ request that cities cut their energy use by 5%, and will instead try for a 10% reduction.
In a 6-0 vote Monday night, the council approved the 10% goal. Councilman Ray DiGuilio was absent.
Public Works Director Ron Calkins said in the past few years the city has cut energy use 30% by installing energy-saving traffic lights, water systems and equipment at its waste-water plant.
It plans to do more, he said, such as installing energy-saving pedestrian crossing signs, energy-efficient light fixtures at City Hall and more sensors that turn off lights when a room is empty.
The city will also soon replace its 30-year-old air-ventilating system with more efficient machines, he said.
City staff members also will be asked to turn off lights and computers when they leave a room and to turn thermostats down.
