Robert Rados; Naval Architect, Ex-Harbor Advisor

Robert G. Rados, 78, naval architect and former member of the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency and Harbor Commission. Rados, respected in the port community of San Pedro, founded and headed his Rados International Corp., which designs and oversees construction of vessels. Among company projects were stabilizing the Queen Mary, refitting the battleships Missouri and New Jersey, and building the submarine set for the film “The Hunt for Red October.” Rados was named to the CRA in 1984 and to the Harbor Commission two years later. He stepped down in 1991 after Times articles questioned a possible conflict of interest over his firm’s contracts to oversee work on a city fire boat and an ocean research vessel. City attorneys found no conflict and Rados, then 68, said he wanted to spend more time with his family. On Feb. 1 in Los Angeles of cancer.
