Blake’s Sore Shoulder Prompts Boucher Call-Up

With defenseman Rob Blake doubtful for tonight’s game because of a bruised right shoulder--the injury leaving him questionable even for next week--the Kings on Friday recalled defenseman Philippe Boucher from the Manitoba Moose of the International Hockey League.

Boucher, 27, has spent parts of the last six seasons with the Kings, but this will mark his first appearance with the club this year.

In 44 games with Manitoba, Boucher had nine goals, a total of 31 points and 39 penalty minutes. In 275 NHL games with the Kings and Buffalo Sabres, he has 30 goals, 96 points and 184 penalty minutes.

Blake’s sore shoulder, injured in the overtime period of Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks, is a delicate subject because the Kings, locked in a stalemate over his contract, are trying to trade the Norris Trophy-winning defenseman. Would team officials be more hesitant than usual to play Blake until he is completely healed for fear his condition could worsen, thus lowering his market value?

“We want points,” Coach Andy Murray said. “If he’s healthy enough to play, he will play.”

Winger Ziggy Palffy is expected back tonight after sitting out Thursday’s 4-2 victory over Carolina because of flu. Palffy returned to practice Friday.
