Airport Expansion

* Re “The Mayor Who Rallied LAX Foes,” Feb. 6: I believe the L.A. International Airport problem could be alleviated with an unusual bit of cooperation between Los Angeles and San Diego. In San Diego there is one ideal spot to construct a new airport that will take the large planes: on Miramar Road east of Highway 15. That location would move no people and have no noise problem. It would not interfere with current Navy operations and, in fact, could enhance them by having more runways available in an emergency.
This would have an enormous effect on the L.A. airport, because it would give the area another large-plane landing strip and would substantially reduce the number of short-haul passengers from San Diego to L.A. This, combined with a reasonable high-speed train would probably preclude the necessity of expanding the L.A. airport.
