Kay Is Key as Titans Rally for Victory Over Loyola, 5-3

Brett Kay had three hits and drove in the go-ahead run and three relievers pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings as Cal State Fullerton defeated Loyola Marymount, 5-3, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday night at Goodwin Field.

Loyola (7-3) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when C.J. Wilson hit a two-run home run off Titan starter Wes Littleton.

Cal State Fullerton (4-5) got an run-scoring single from Kyle Boyer in the first and then took a 3-2 lead in the second when David Bacani and Kay had RBI singles.

After the Lions evened the score in the fifth, Jason Corapci reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third when catcher Kris Zacuto threw wildly into center field. Corapci then scored the eventual game-winner on Kay’s single to center field.

Fullerton added an insurance run in the eighth when pinch-hitter Shawn Norris led off with a double and scored on a ground ball by Corapci.

Travis Esquibel, who retired all four batters he faced in relief, earned the win. Shane Waroff pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings and Chad Cordero retired all five batters he faced to get his first save.

The Titans host Brigham Young for a three-game series that begins at 7 p.m. tonight.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

UC Irvine 64, UC Santa Barbara 57--The visiting Anteaters shot 46% from the field, while holding UC Santa Barbara to 36% in the upset victory. UCI was three for seven from the three-point line.

Guard Lisa Woznick led the way with 17 points and six assists for the Anteaters (12-13, 3-7). UC Santa Barbara is 13-8, 7-2.
