Cowboys Might Move Camp Back to L.A. Area

The Dallas Cowboys are considering returning to Southern California for part of training camp, 12 years after having left Thousand Oaks, where the team held camp for 27 years.

Among the sites team officials have visited are the Raiders’ former training site in Oxnard and the campuses of Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State, though it appears there would be scheduling conflicts at both schools and Long Beach is not a possibility before next year.

The Oxnard site is the Residence Inn by Marriott at River Ridge.

An NFL source indicated that the Cowboys are giving “serious consideration” to holding part of training camp in Texas and the rest in California, partly to escape the heat and media focus of Texas and partly to take advantage of marketing opportunities in California.

The team trained at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks from 1963-89 before returning to Texas to train in Austin and more recently Wichita Falls, where summer temperatures reach triple-digits.

It remains possible the team will train in Wichita Falls this year.

“Our response would pretty much be we don’t have an announcement to make at this time,” team spokesman Rich Dalrymple said.
