Fullerton Men Advance; Orange Coast Loses

Romel Beck scored 34 points Friday night to lead Fullerton to an 81-73 victory over Palomar in the first round of the Southern California men’s basketball playoffs at Fullerton.

J.J. Sola added 19 points and nine rebounds for the Hornets (22-10), who play the winner of today’s L.A. Valley-Pasadena game in Wednesday’s second round.

In another first-round game:

San Diego City 89, Orange Coast 81--Despite 29 points from Nick Burwell and 21 from Chad Hagedorn, Orange Coast (16-14) lost on the road.

In the Southern California women’s basketball playoffs:

West Los Angeles 82, Cypress 55--West L.A. sophomore Angela Garrett scored 23 points, becoming the fifth women’s player in school history to score more than 1,000. Cypress finished 12-19.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Grossmont 2--Mike Garcia had 17 kills for visiting Golden West (1-0, 1-0), which won, 25-21, 24-26, 26-28, 29-27, 17-15.

Orange Coast 3, San Diego Mesa 0--Orange Coast (6-0, 1-0) opened conference play with a 25-22, 25-14, 25-23 victory. Soren Schneider had 14 kills, Ed Chun had 12 digs and setter Nick Ptaschinski had 32 assists.
