LINEMAN OF THE YEAR
Discussion of The Times’ Orange County Lineman of the Year award begins and ends with Alex deBrucky of Esperanza.
“He’s tough,” said Tim Burnette, a 6-foot-7, 238-pound all-county defensive lineman who also played tight end for San Clemente and lined up opposite deBrucky. “He’s just physical.”
Physical is the nature of most Esperanza linemen, and deBrucky (6-3, 240) stood out. The cornerstone of the defense, which helped the Aztecs rise to No. 1 in county rankings, deBrucky is considering Colorado State, California, Northwestern and Arizona State.
DeBrucky had nine sacks and 125 tackles. He forced two fumbles, recovered two fumbles and forced a hurried pass seven times.
“I like to think I’m versatile,” deBrucky said.
Versatile? He played tight end, catching 10 passes for 156 yards, and his blocking helped Temitope Sonuyi score 30 touchdowns.
DeBrucky also carries a 4.17 grade-point average.
Versatile indeed.
