* Trumpet Tribute--Herb Jeffries stars in “Blow, Gabriel, Blow,” a tribute to trumpet legends Louis Armstrong, Ziggy Elman and Mannie Klein, this weekend at the University of Judaism. Jeffries, who sang with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, will serve as emcee and perform some of the songs that the trumpet masters made famous. The show’s all-star band will be led by clarinetist Abe Most and feature Gerald Wiggins on piano, Al Viola on guitar, Allen Weiss on drums, and Al Aarons, Hershey Bell and Zeke Zarchey on trumpet. * Photo Exhibit--”Assignment: L. A.,” an exhibit of photos by Los Angeles Times photographer Boris Yaro, opens Tuesday at Cal State Northridge’s Performing Arts Center. The retrospective of 40 photos spanning Yaro’s 35-year career includes the Robert Kennedy assassination, the Watts riots, the Northridge earthquake and other events. * Radio Theater--Julie Harris and Glenne Headly star in L. A. Theatre Works’ radio theater-style production of Lillian Hellman’s “The Autumn Garden,” opening Wednesday for a six-performance run at the Skirball Cultural Center. The Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright looks upon sad and funny human frailties as longtime friends enter the autumn of their lives and the summer of 1949 draws to a close. All performances will be recorded before an audience for future broadcast on KCRW-FM.
