Young Will Sit This One Out

Share

Tonight the Bruins will be without guard Ray Young, hobbled because of a sprained left foot. He underwent X-rays on the foot Wednesday, the results of which were not available at press time. Regardless, Young has been ruled out of tonight’s Pacific 10 Conference opener against Washington and is questionable for Saturday’s game against Washington State. A streaky outside shooter, Young has started seven games and is averaging 11.4 points and 3.2 rebounds a game. Most likely, he will be replaced in the starting lineup by Jason Flowers.

Point guard Earl Watson had planned to have his sore right wrist X-rayed Wednesday but didn’t get the chance. A UCLA official said the injury is not believed to be serious and should not cut into Watson’s playing time.

vs. Washington, 7:30

Fox Sports Net 2

* Site--Pauley Pavilion.

* Radio--KXTA (1150).

* Records--UCLA 5-4, Washington 6-6.

* Update--Things usually go the Bruins’ way when they open the Pacific 10 Conference season at home. Since 1990, they are 4-1 in league openers at Pauley Pavilion, with the last loss coming against Arizona, 82-80, in 1993. Tonight’s game will be a rematch of last season’s conference opener, when the No. 24 Bruins suffered a one-point loss to the unranked Huskies in Seattle. That game ended in controversy. Jason Kapono made a jump shot at the buzzer that was ruled a two-pointer; his foot was on the three-point line. The Huskies prevailed, 63-62.
