Applications are available for several fellowships that provide hands-on governmental experience in Sacramento and other parts of the state.

The Center for California Studies at Cal State Sacramento anticipates receiving 1,000 applications for the 11-month fellowships. These include:

* Jesse M. Unruh Assembly Fellowship program, which places 18 people in Assembly members’ Capitol or committee offices from October 2001 to September 2002.

* Executive Fellowship program, in which 18 people are chosen to work in such executive branch offices as the governor’s office or the California Environmental Protection Agency, from September 2001 to August 2002.

* Judicial Administration Fellowship program, which places 10 people throughout the state from September 2001 to August 2002 to help improve the management and administration of the court system.

Applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree by October 2001, although no specific major is preferred. While many of fellows tend to be young recent graduates, past fellows have included a high school civics teacher and a retired physician, said Tim Hodson, executive director of the center.

“These are not internships. The fellows are regarded as professionals and are given very challenging high-level work. It’s not unusual for a fellow to be given a bill proposal and told, ‘Make sure this passes,’ ” Hodson said.

Feb. 9 is the deadline for Judicial Administration Fellowship applicants; all other applications are due Feb. 28.
