Fluor Exec Promoted to New Consolidated Role

Fluor Corp. on Monday named Alan Boeckmann, a 25-year veteran of the Aliso Viejo-based engineering and consulting company, to the newly created positions of president and chief operating officer, with responsibility over all business operations, finance, human resources and communications.

Boeckmann, 52, had been president and chief executive of Fluor Daniel Inc., Fluor’s core engineering and construction unit. He now will oversee a wider portfolio of businesses, including business management and maintenance, and a group providing support and expertise in real estate, finance, safety and other service areas.

The move positions Boeckmann clearly as No. 2 to Fluor’s chairman and chief executive, Philip J. Carroll Jr. Carroll said in a statement that the appointment will help him craft a “new Fluor” whose far-flung businesses work more productively together. As part of the strategy, Fluor recently spun off its coal business, Massey Energy Co., into a separate company.

“By pulling together the business operations of the corporation under a single leadership position, the company will be able to more quickly assess market and customer opportunities and deliver services in the most optimal and cost-effective manner,” Carroll said.

In an interview Monday, Boeckmann said he will make a series of changes in the corporate structure of Fluor, which generated $10 billion in revenue last year from a complex web of operations around the globe.

Restructurings have eliminated more than 5,000 jobs, including 400 in Orange County, since Carroll became chief executive in July 1998. But Boeckmann said he didn’t foresee any additional large job losses.

“This should not have any significant effect on the total number of our employees,” he said. “In fact, we anticipate that we will be actually increasing employment as our businesses expand.”
