Plan for Hall of Justice Renovation Advances

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday took the next step toward refurbishing the historic Hall of Justice by deciding to accept proposals from the private sector.

Sheriff Lee Baca and Supervisor Mike Antonovich are leading the effort to revitalize the Italian Renaissance-style structure. While Baca wants to move his offices, now in Monterey Park, back downtown, Antonovich and others cite the cultural importance of the historic building.

To bring the building, which has been empty since the 1994 Northridge earthquake, back to its former glory will cost an estimated $100 million. David Janssen, chief administrative officer, said a principle source of revenue would be the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The county would pay about $63 million over the next 25 years.

The supervisors insist that if the refurbishment is not financially viable, they will not move forward.
