Local Republicans Mark Inauguration

About 150 Republicans, including Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley, marked Saturday’s presidential inauguration with a breakfast celebration at Braemar Country Club.

Three big-screen televisions were tuned to live coverage of President George W. Bush’s swearing-in ceremony as local campaign volunteers and Republican Party supporters gathered to share in their long-awaited moment of victory.

Minutes before Bush was sworn into office, Cooley said the day marked a new beginning for the United States and for Los Angeles County.

“It’s time for a change, and I think it’s a good one,” Cooley said.

Connie Anderson, president of the Tarzana/Reseda Republicans Club, was enthusiastic about the Bush presidency.

“This is such an exciting time for us,” she said. “We’ve been working very hard for Bush, and I think he’ll be wonderful. He is going to unite both the parties and the country.”

Other Republicans at the breakfast also expressed high expectations for Bush.

“It’s the kickoff,” said Andre Brown, an actor and assistant football coach at Chatsworth High School. “We’re going to run with the ball and we’re going to score a lot of touchdowns.”

But for Mickey Rappaport, Saturday’s transfer of presidential power was more about the office than the person in it.

“The man is not as important as what the day stands for,” the Encino resident said. “It’s the nation coming together after a very difficult election. It’s important for everyone to come out and be excited about this event.”
