Woodbridge used scoring runs of 8-0 and 13-3 to wipe out two Villa Park leads and beat the No. 4 Spartans, 59-52, Saturday in a nonleague boys’ basketball game at Woodbridge.

The seventh-ranked Warriors (16-4) trailed by three points early in the second quarter before scoring eight in a row to take a 21-16 lead. Villa Park then went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Matt MacGinnis three-pointer that gave the Spartans (16-4) a 23-21 halftime advantage.

The Spartans led by four in the third quarter before Woodbridge got hot again, outscoring Villa Park, 13-3, to take the lead for good.

Woodbridge forward Doug Koeller, who finished with 14 points, scored nine in the third quarter.

“The kids worked their tails off tonight,” Woodbridge Coach John Halagan said. “Our depth was what won it for us.”

Woodbridge led, 52-38, midway through the fourth quarter, but Villa Park staged a furious comeback, closing the gap to three on a Tommy Stankan three-pointer with 55 seconds left. The Warriors were able to hold on, however, as Patrick Haddan made two free throws with 13 seconds left to seal the victory.

“Haddan had a rough start tonight, but had a big second half for us,” Halagan said. “All our kids played well.”

Tashaan Forehan-Kelly led Woodbridge with 18 points. Koeller and Haddan added 14 each. Kyle Egkan had 12 points for Villa Park.

“We battled out there, but we just couldn’t get our shots to fall,” Villa Park Coach Kevin Reynolds said. “I give [Woodbridge] a lot of credit.”
