Warner Staying With Trojans as Assistant Coach

Share

Andrea Warner, who played soccer at Dana Hills High, was named, along with Neil Sedgwick, as an assistant coach of the USC women’s soccer team last week.

Warner played for USC from 1997-2000, competing in all 84 of the Trojans’ games during those years and finishing her career with 11 goals and 12 assists.

Warner, a Times’ Orange County first-team selection in 1997, will help coach a team that includes several former county standouts: Ali Fennel (Mater Dei), Megan Abbamonto (Capistrano Valley), Brittany Savelkoul (Los Alamitos), Kim Abbamonto (Capistrano Valley) and Liane Nikano (Fountain Valley). Capistrano Valley senior Ashley Casas will also play for the Trojans next season.

“Andrea is a great addition,” said USC Coach Jim Millinder. “I always thought she had a great understanding of the game and will be a great help to our program.”

GOOD GAME TO FORGET

Capistrano Valley’s Coco DeAngelo played the entire game against Mission Viejo Saturday, but doesn’t remember a thing about the Cougars’ 1-0 loss.

The senior forward suffered a concussion at some point during the game and when it was over, she was in the dark as to what happened.

“She can’t remember a thing,” said Cougar Coach Jack Peterson. “Nobody saw it happen and nobody knows when it happened.”

HOW COULD HE REFUSE?

There was no way James Reeves could say no.

After watching Katie Frattone score both goals in Santa Margarita’s 2-0 Serra League victory over Mater Dei Saturday, Reeves was stunned when Frattone and the entire Eagle team unfurled a banner in front of the sidelines that read “James, winter formal?”

Reeves, a Santa Margarita student, quickly jumped to his feet and ran out on the field to give Frattone a hug.

His answer? “I said yes.”

LOOKING AHEAD

The top two teams in the Sunset League will finally meet today when No. 8 Edison (13-1-5, 2-0-2) travels to No. 7 Esperanza (11-1-5, 3-0-1) for a 4:45 p.m. game.

Brea Olinda will host Valencia Thursday in a game that should decide the Orange League title. The Wildcats (12-4-3, 3-0) upset the two-time defending champions last season to win the title. They have already defeated Valencia (8-8-2, 2-1) twice this season and should win their second consecutive title. The game begins at 3:15 p.m.

In the Empire League, Cypress (11-5, 3-0) can take control of the race with a victory over El Dorado (8-7-2, 2-1) Thursday at 3:15 p.m. at Cypress.
