Meteorologists say Southern California can expect typically cool and damp weather through the weekend, with scattered showers forecast for today and heavier rain on Friday and Saturday.

Byron Morton, a forecaster with Weather Central, which provides meteorological information for The Times, said this morning’s showers should taper off about noon, resume for several hours in the late afternoon and end shortly after nightfall.

“There won’t be a lot of precipitation, maybe a 10th of an inch to a quarter of an inch in most areas,” Morton said. “But it will be pretty cool, with the snow level dropping as low as 3,000 to 4,000 feet.”

He said skies will clear partially on Thursday before a second storm system moves in late Thursday night, bringing stronger showers that should last through Friday and into Saturday afternoon.

“What you’ve got is unsettled conditions, which is the way it’s supposed to be this time of year,” Morton said.

There is a slight chance of light rain again on Monday.
