TIMES STAFF WRITER

This weekend brings the third annual Southern California International Vintage Poster Fair to Santa Monica. “2001: A Poster Odyssey” will feature more than 10,000 vintage posters--from works by Toulouse-Lautrec to movie posters--from around the world, most of them for sale. Themes include World Wars I and II, world’s fairs, circuses, travel, sports and Art Deco.

For early birds, there’s a preview Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. The $25 fee for that event includes wine tasting and admission for the rest of the weekend.

The fair continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $10 daily or $15 for both Saturday and Sunday. The event takes place at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, 1855 Main St. Call (800) 856-8069 for details.

Frolic. Hug. Nurture.

No, we haven’t gone all New Age-y, but flatware has. It was only a matter of time before “inspirational” words, the kind found inscribed on jewelry and rocks, found their way to tableware.

Gracewords, as the line of inscribed stainless-steel flatware is dubbed, is the brainchild of Anne McCracken , founder of Design/Design in Wytheville, Va.

Observe. Reflect. Shine.

For eight place settings (plus four serving pieces), you have to fork out $320. One place setting consists of a teaspoon, soup spoon, knife, dinner fork and salad-dessert fork. Each utensil handle is inscribed with a different word. Same goes for a 12-place setting (with six serving pieces), which sells for $480. All of the words on the tableware make for handy icebreakers at a dinner gathering.

Wonder. Yearn. Encouage. (This is addictive.)

What better way to spend a gray day in January than by daydreaming about redoing a room at home in some exotic style or maybe even taking a trip to some romantic island this summer. Might as well dream big--try both.

The Warisan Design Tour: An Insider’s Guide to Bali’s Homes, Shops and Culture will tour the Indonesian island June 8-18. The tour is being held by Warisan, which was founded in Indonesia in 1990 as a restorer of Indonesian and Chinese antiques and manufacturer of furniture, accessories and, more recently, lighting. The company distributes to retailers worldwide, and in 1999 opened a store on Beverly Boulevard in L.A.

The design-oriented tour will be led by Liza Robinson Vidal, Warisan’s U.S. director of sales, who lived in Bali for 12 years. Stops will include Bali homes, resorts, gardens, silversmith and woodcarver’s workshops, and there will be time for shopping, of course. For details on the $2,595 tour (air fare not included), phone (323) 938-3960 or (877) WARISANS or check out https://www.warisan.com.
