HBO Is Taking De La Hoya to Court Over Contract

Oscar De La Hoya has another court fight on his hands.

The HBO cable network asked a New York federal district court judge Friday for a declaratory judgment on its contract with the former welterweight champion, a contract that covers De La Hoya’s next four fights.

When De La Hoya won his freedom from promoter Bob Arum in a Los Angeles courtroom earlier this month, his handlers told HBO that De La Hoya wished to fight Arturo Gatti on March 24 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Although that date wasn’t readily available, HBO officials, according to several sources, agreed to juggle their schedule, but wanted assurances that De La Hoya would honor the rest of the contract.

When there was no reply from De La Hoya’s side, HBO officials decided to clarify their position in court.

Both sides declined comment.
