OXNARD — A motorist searching for his cellular telephone is believed to have caused a four-vehicle pileup Saturday afternoon that injured eight people, police said.
The accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. at Pleasant Valley and Saviers roads.
Five men and three women were taken to several local hospitals for treatment of bumps and bruises, and all were released Saturday night, police said.
David Belmont, 28, of Oxnard was searching for his phone when he apparently drove into the intersection against a red light, Oxnard Police Officer Jeff Kay said.
Belmont’s van either struck or was struck by two cars, causing the van to go airborne and land upside down on a fourth vehicle, Kay said.
“There were some real lucky people here today,” Kay said.
The intersection was closed for more than an hour, resulting in some backups, although most traffic was rerouted.
No tickets were issued, but the crash remained under investigation.
