Tutoring Offered to At-Risk Pupils

A tutorial program for at-risk students in the Buena Park School District will begin Tuesday.

Before and after school and on Saturdays, teachers will help students at risk of falling below their grade level in math and reading.

Last year, about 12% of students--731 out of 6,000--were at risk of being held back, according to Assistant Supt. Marilou Ryder.

Of the 731 students tutored last year, 402 of them no longer require the extra help, she said.

“We think a lot of that has to do with those tutorials,” she said.

District officials, who started the program last year, are again targeting pupils in kindergarten through eighth grade.

The program will be held at elementary and junior high campuses throughout the district. Each school will hold tutorials at least two times a week and transportation will be provided to all students who regularly ride school buses.
