A key lawmaker said he thought there would be enough votes in the Senate to block a possible presidential veto of a controversial measure to fund experimentation on cells from human embryos.

“I believe we’re getting close to the 60 votes necessary in the Senate to be able to resolve this issue,” Sen. Orrin G. Hatch of Utah, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on ABC’s “This Week” program.

President Bush has said he supports federal funding of research on stem cells obtained from adults, but some scientists question whether those cell have the same therapeutic potential as embryonic cells.
