Pro-Airport Group Sues O.C. Over Ballot Measure

Proponents of an international airport at the closed El Toro Marine base sued the county Tuesday, saying the title and summary of an anti-airport initiative on the March ballot are inadequate.

Bruce Nestande of pro-airport Citizens for Jobs and the Economy said County Counsel Laurence M. Watson failed to disclose that the proposed Orange County Central Park initiative would allow extensive development on the former base. The title prepared by Watson’s office says the measure would designate the base for open-space uses.

“It is critical that the title and summary accurately inform voters that the El Toro property will not all be reserved as open space,” said Fredric D. Woocher, an attorney for the pro-airport group.

Watson said he had not seen the lawsuit Tuesday and could not comment.
