Bay Bridge Blues
Re “North-South Gap Widens on Bay Bridge,” July 5: Over 10 years after the Loma Prieta earthquake, Northern California leaders are complaining about the failure of Southern California to contribute more to the ongoing repairs. Shortly after that earthquake, California endured an emergency sales-tax increase to pay for repairs. When the time came for repaying Southern California for its contributions, a statewide quake recovery bond was defeated in June 1994. Thus a fair solution requires that either the Bay Bridge simply be closed or that the users pay for its repairs with increased tolls.
