Conejo Valley Unified School District trustees are set to choose a contractor tonight to build the long-awaited Sycamore Canyon School in the Dos Vientos subdivision.

The board is expected to hire Oxnard-based Viola Constructors for $9.2 million. Work should begin in about a month and be completed within a year, said Gary Mortimer, assistant superintendent for business services.

The kindergarten through fifth grade school will serve about 280 students this fall in portable classrooms at Cypress Elementary School. At full enrollment, Sycamore Canyon will have about 600 students, officials said.

A plan to expand the school through eighth grade, creating a “mini middle school” on the campus, is pending. The move is an attempt to ease overcrowding in the district’s four intermediate schools.

The school board meets at 7 p.m. at 1400 E. Janss Road.
