Davis Returning to Raptors

From Staff and Wire Reports

Antonio Davis and the Toronto Raptors agreed to a five-year deal worth more than $60 million, his agent said.

The agreement--which cannot be signed until Wednesday, the first day of the free-agent signing period--allows the team to hang on to a coveted free agent after last season’s high-profile defection of Tracy McGrady to the Orlando Magic. It also should help the Raptors re-sign superstar Vince Carter, who will be a free agent after next season, agent Bill Duffy said.

Davis, a 6-foot-9 center who averaged 13.7 points and 10.1 rebounds last season, was wooed by the Magic, Chicago Bulls and Seattle SuperSonics, among others.

Later in the day, forward Jerome Williams agreed to a seven-year contract to also remain with the Raptors.

Tyson Chandler described his professional debut Wednesday night as “terrible” and “horrible.” The former Compton Dominguez High star scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds as his Bulls lost to the Memphis Grizzlies, 109-71, in a Summer Pro League game in Long Beach.

“I was just awful,” said Chandler, who made four of eight shots in 23 minutes. “My mind wasn’t there.”

Public money cannot be used to build a new $250-million arena for the relocating Vancouver Grizzlies without a public vote, Chancery Judge Walter Evans ruled in Memphis, Tenn., in favor of a lawsuit filed by local lawyer Duncan Ragsdale. The Grizzlies plan an appeal. . . . Denver Nugget guard Voshon Lenard received five stitches on his non-shooting left hand after he was hit with a bottle outside a Miami strip club, police said. Police would not discuss details of the attack but did say Lenard did not seek to press charges against the unidentified attacker. . . .
