FRESHWATER

Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass are biting on plastic worms and night crawlers at 10-20 feet, averaging one-four pounds. Some catfish.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass are being seen and occasionally caught, mostly on anchovies. Catfish and largemouth bass are fairly active too.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--Trout and catfish are biting, the trout holding deep and striking Needlefish and Rapalas, the cats taking mackerel in the shallows. Bass action is fair for mostly small fish striking plastic worms, night crawlers and crankbaits.

LAKE PIRU--Trout fishing is fair with standard baits and lures. Bass are active early along the northeast shore. A nine-pounder was caught on a Super Spook. Crappies are biting near brush.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trollers are doing fairly well for trout, dragging Needlefish at about 30 feet. Some limits. Lots of small bass are being caught near the surface early and deeper, on plastic worms, during the day.

Orange County

ANAHEIM LAKE--Tony Avila, La Habra, and Jim Suchy, Anaheim, teamed to catch 48 catfish totaling 137 pounds, using mackerel at the bubble hole. The bite is good.

IRVINE LAKE--A 75-pound blue catfish was caught on mackerel by an Ohio angler in mid-afternoon. It was released after being weighed. Catfish and bass are cooperating. A 9-pound 7-ounce bass was caught on a crankbait along the west shore.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish are active afternoons and evenings. An 18-pounder was caught on mackerel at the dam. Bass fishing is fair to good for fish averaging two-three pounds. It should get better with a weed-harvesting program concluding today.

San Bernardino County

BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout fishing improved despite thunderstorms early in the week. Some limits but few big fish. Flashlight Rigs and flasher-crawler combos are working best.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Top trout was a four-pounder caught on a mealworm. Trout fishing is fair, with Power Bait working best.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--Catfish to about 14 pounds have been caught late afternoons and evenings. Garlic-flavored mackerel working best. Crappie action is fair at dusk on mini-jigs tipped with mealworms, fished beneath a bobber.

LAKE PERRIS--Mostly small largemouth bass are being caught on plastic worms and crankbaits at the east end, but the bite is an early one. Other species are slow.

LAKE SKINNER--Small striped bass are staring to boil after baitfish and most are being caught on anchovies, jerkbaits and chicken livers. Largemouth bass and catfish are biting too.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--The crappie bite is best. Catfish action is next best and trout action is not very good, but bright Roostertails and gold Kastmasters are attracting some.

DIXON LAKE--Night fishing for small catfish, with mackerel, is the best bet. Other species are not cooperating.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Bass and bluegills are most active at Lower Otay, where a 10-2 bass caught on a plastic worm tops the list. The two species are cooperating at San Vicente as well. Catfish are biting best at Hodges.

Eastern Sierra

BISHOP AREA--A 10-pound 1-ounce rainbow trout was caught on a Roostertail at South Lake, where fishing is fair. Another 5-4 was caught on Velveeta cheese in Bishop Creek. Bishop Creek Canyon waters are fair to good overall.

MAMMOTH LAKES AREA--Crowley Lake anglers are doing well in McGee Bay and off Alligator Point, using mostly orange Power Bait and night crawlers. Convict Lake and the basin lakes are producing fairly well on standard baits and flies. Few large fish.

JUNE LAKE LOOP--The surface bite is fair at all the lakes. June fly anglers are doing well with black woolly buggers. June produced an eight-pounder, caught on a black-and-gold Rapala. Grant produced a five-pounder, caught on a Roostertail from shore. Worms are best in Rush Creek.

BRIDGEPORT AREA--Twin Lakes anglers are doing well for fish big and small. A 7-3 trout was caught on rainbow Power Bait at Lower Twin. Bridgeport Reservoir has dropped and the marina ramp is closed, but boats are still available for rent. Fishing is fair to good on inflated night crawlers. Fishing on the East Walker River is fair, despite high flows. Virginia Lakes are good for mostly pan-sized rainbows. Lots of limits.
