Long-term plans for the annual Dance Kaleidoscope series may be uncertain, but the immediate future holds a splashy farewell gala for outgoing Kaleidoscope artistic director Don Hewitt. Besides producing the series since 1987, Hewitt made important contributions to dance training at the L.A. High School for the Performing Arts and Cal State L.A. Hence this tribute by Kayamanan Ng Lahi Philippine Folk Arts, Loretta Livingston, Danza Floricanto USA., Matthew Rushing, Tongue, Ramaa and Swetha Bharadvaj, Lula Washington Dance Theatre, Victoria Koenig, Jazz Tap Ensemble’s New Generation and, on the plaza at intermission, Shel Wagner Rasch and Stephanie Nugent.

After a brief outing as part of the Ford Amphitheatre’s family matinee series in June, Troubadour Theatre Company’s new kid-friendly, very loopy clown show, “Funky Punks With Junk in Their Trunks,” is returning for a full theatrical run at the indoor Miles Memorial Playhouse.

The Southwest Museum will host a fiesta and sale of contemporary Casas Grandes-style pottery Saturday and Sunday. The pots are created from natural clays of Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico, and are coil-built and pit-fired in the tradition of ancient pueblo pottery. The weekend also features three renowned pottery-making families who continue the ancient tradition of the Mata Ortiz area. Artists will demonstrate firings, painting and pottery making.

Pianists galore take over the stage of the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, when Carl St.Clair leads the Pacific Symphony in the July concert of the orchestra’s outdoor summer pops series. Cliburn gold medalist Stanislav Ioudenitch--the other gold medalist and two silver medalists will also solo at the amphitheater this summer--will play Mozart’s Concerto No. 21, K. 467, as the featured soloist. But two other pianists, Wendy Chen and Robert Thies, will also appear, in Saint-Sans’ “Carnival of the Animals,” narrated by Hal Landon Jr.

The fourth annual Reventon Super Estrella concert sponsored by Spanish-language radio station KSSE-FM (97.5 and 103.1) features Chayanne, Alejandra Guzman Vilma Palma e Vampiros, Sentidos Opuestos, Moenia, OV7, El Chombo and MDO. Station DJs plan to give the Arrowhead Pond a club-like atmosphere for the event, part of whose proceeds will benefit the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.

International Pop Overthrow, a sprawling festival of pure pop, is even more preposterously ambitious in its fourth year, summoning more than 140 acts from around the world to perform in the Southland over the next two weeks. Lush in Glendale is the scene of the cork-popping opening show.
