Floods that have hammered eastern India for a week worsened as more than 100,000 people were evacuated from their homes after torrents of water released from a dam poured into already-flooded coastal plains.

Officials said about 7 million people had been hit by the flooding, which has claimed 42 lives and left more than a million marooned since spreading into giant lakes across the state of Orissa earlier this week.
