Reviving Glaus Hits a Milestone

Share

Emergency workers removed the cars carrying toxic chemicals from a derailed train in a tunnel near Camden Yards soon enough for baseball to resume Saturday after three nights of postponements.

The Angels, in the spirit of the local rescue efforts, used the opportunity to get their derailed third baseman back on track. Troy Glaus, who was batting .197 (12 for 61) with one home run and four runs batted in this month, hit a pair of two-run homers to help the Angels beat the Orioles, 6-5.

Both of Glaus’ shots off Baltimore starter Josh Towers were preceded by David Eckstein singles, the first with two out in the third inning and the second with one out in the fifth.

Glaus blasted an 0-and-1 pitch into the left-field seats in the third for his first homer since July 5, his 23rd homer of the season and 100th of his career, becoming the fastest player in Angel history (456 games) to reach that milestone.

“It’s nothing major,” Glaus said. “It’s just a nice round number.”

Glaus didn’t sit on 100 for long. He went right to work on 200 in his next at-bat, lining a 2-and-1 pitch over the wall in center in the fifth inning for a two-run homer and a 4-1 Angel lead.

“It feels nice to contribute any night,” said Glaus, who is batting .246. “We need to keep winning. It doesn’t matter where it comes from.”

Glaus also had a key at-bat in the ninth, following Eckstein’s leadoff double with a groundout to second, advancing Eckstein to third. Eckstein scored what proved to be a crucial insurance run on Darin Erstad’s sacrifice fly, giving the Angels a 5-2 lead.

Glaus also made two outstanding defensive plays, picking up Melvin Mora’s eighth-inning bunt with his bare hand and making the off-balance throw to first, and making a backhand stop of Jeff Conine’s 10th-inning grounder far behind the bag and throwing to first.

“Part of my job is to drive in runs, and part is to stop them from scoring runs,” Glaus said. “That doesn’t change whether I hit .380 or .240.”

Manager Mike Scioscia said closer Troy Percival, who threw 22 pitches in the ninth inning Saturday night, will not be available for today’s day-night doubleheader against the Orioles, the Angels’ first doubleheader since Sept. 14, 1999, when they swept Kansas City.

To fortify the bullpen, the Angels recalled right-hander Toby Borland after Saturday’s game and optioned outfielder Jeff DaVanon to triple-A Salt Lake. Borland, who had a 6-1 record and 2.65 earned-run average in 34 games at Salt Lake, will join the Angels today.

Angel right-hander Ramon Ortiz gave up two runs on five hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking three, for a no-decision Saturday night. . . . The three runs Percival gave up in the ninth were the first earned runs he has given up on the road this season, snapping a 16 2/3-inning streak.
