A school district accountant was arrested Friday, accused of embezzling thousands of dollars from a fund designed to help poor families attend district meetings.

Juana Alicia Ramirez, 51, and her husband, Leopoldo Felix Ramirez, 35, were being held on theft and conspiracy charges. Bail for each was set at $750,000.

The superintendent of the Alum Rock School District, which covers 25 elementary and middle schools in San Jose, told police Thursday night that he had evidence that someone had embezzled $35,000 over the last two years. Police said investigators believe the total will be more than $250,000.
