From Times Staff Reports

A 44-year-old woman was critically injured when the car she was driving allegedly ran a red light and collided with an MTA bus in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, transit authorities said.

The woman’s passengers, a 49-year-old man and two boys, ages 11 and 12, suffered minor injuries, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis said.

The 34-year-old bus driver, who was finishing her last run of the day when the accident occurred, was feeling “very shaky” after the collision but was not hurt, according to MTA spokesman Jose Ubaldo.

There were no passengers on the bus, which was traveling north on Los Angeles Street shortly before 6 p.m. when it collided with the car at Temple Street, Ubaldo said. He said that the car’s driver ran a red light; the collision caused the bus driver to lose control of the bus, which knocked down a traffic signal and a tree before coming to a halt against the Federal Building on Temple Street.

Authorities on Saturday did not release the names of those involved in the accident. The car’s driver was in critical condition at County-USC Medical Center late Saturday.

An investigation, including drug and alcohol testing routinely administered to an MTA driver involved in an accident, is continuing.
