Spoof-Happy MTV Movie Awards

If you want glamour, watch the Academy Awards.

If you want spontaneity, turn to the Golden Globes.

If you want loopy lampoons, then wield that remote and find the 2001 MTV Movie Awards, which airs tonight at 9.

Bold, brassy and freewheeling as usual, the 10th edition of this two-hour show (taped Saturday at the Shrine Auditorium) opens with a spirited spoof of “The Mummy Returns” in which hosts Jimmy Fallon (“Saturday Night Live”) and Kirsten Dunst, joined by Snoop Dogg and Oded Fehr, battle Rob Schneider, who’s furious that he was never asked to emcee the gala.

After that, Fallon and Dunst perform a musical parody of Madonna’s “Don’t Tell Me,” accompanied by dancers wearing ape costumes from the upcoming “Planet of the Apes.” This, after all, is one awards giveaway that welcomes a plethora of plugs for upcoming projects.

In another amusing parody, a nude Andy Dick, with a strategically placed coconut, turns up in scenes from “Cast Away” opposite Tom Hanks, who leaves him behind on the island. Good move, Tom. We would’ve done the same thing.

Not surprisingly, the presenters’ patter is the Achilles’ heel of the show, but then why should that element be different from all the other backslapping ceremonies filling prime time?

Booking Fallon was the brightest idea of all on the part of producer Joel Gallen. He’s consistently funny, whether strumming a guitar and making silly voices as Adam Sandler (who breaks out in tears while witnessing the tomfoolery) or doing spot-on impressions of Chris Rock and Jerry Seinfeld.

A nervous Cameron Diaz was one of the winners, wiping her wet armpits as she picked up the best on-screen team award for “Charlie’s Angels,” in which she starred with Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu.

Fallon wasn’t really auditioning for a spot on the Oscars, but if Steve Martin and Billy Crystal take a pass next year, the academy could always give him some consideration.
