Fifty people were evacuated and three people, including a 2-year-old girl, were rescued from a top-floor balcony during an apartment fire Saturday night in Thousand Oaks, authorities said.

The blaze broke out about 6:15 p.m. in a third-floor unit at the Shadow Hills Apartments, a five-building complex for low-income residents in the 200 block of West Wilbur Drive.

When firefighters arrived, they saw a man and woman stretching to hand the girl to people on the second floor and a dog jumping from the third-floor unit into bushes, said county fire spokeswoman Sandi Wells.

The girl was uninjured and the dog suffered a broken leg, Wells said. The man and woman climbed to safety with the help of firefighters.

They were treated at Los Robles Regional Medical Center for smoke inhalation. Fire personnel and American Red Cross workers were helping to find shelter for the victims and displaced residents.

A cause had not been established late Saturday.
