Puerto Ricans’ Parade Is Raucous but Peaceful

Hundreds of thousands of people lined New York City’s Fifth Avenue for the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, waving flags and blowing whistles and horns in a raucous display of ethnic pride.
However, the event also drew extra police presence because of a post-parade melee last year in which more than 50 women were sexually accosted in and around Central Park. This year’s parade ended with 24 arrests but few reports of violence.
