Blue Star Defeats Seahorses in Overtime

McKinley Tennyson scored eight minutes into overtime to lead the Orange County Blue Star to a 3-2 victory over the Southern California Seahorses in a Premier Development League soccer game Sunday at Santa Ana Stadium.

Tennyson’s goal gave the Blue Star (9-3), the first-place team in the Southwest Division, its seventh consecutive victory

The Blue Star trailed, 2-0, after the Seahorses scored twice in the first half. Orange County’s Sean Lockheart scored in the 57th minute to make it 2-1 and Tennyson scored the tying goal off an assist from Tom Poltl with two minutes remaining in regulation.

In overtime, Shaun Saunders passed to Tennyson, who beat two defenders and the Seahorses’ goalkeeper for the victory.

WATER POLO

Australia scored eight first-half goals and defeated the United States, 14-8, in the championship game of the Canada Cup women’s water polo tournament in Montreal.

Erika Figge of Santa Margarita High scored her first international goal for the U.S. Olympian Coralie Simmons of UCLA, led the U.S. with three goals.

Australia capitalized on eight of nine man-advantage situations but the U.S. scored on only three of nine.

It was the second time in two days the two teams had played each other. The U.S. won the first game, 7-6, in overtime.

SOFTBALL

Infielders Michele Cuthill of Vista High and Cassandra Shoaf of Ridgecrest Burroughs have signed to play softball for Hope International.

TRACK AND FIELD

UC Irvine freshman Jenny Liou, who posted a personal-best of 4 minutes 33.42 seconds during the regular season, has qualified for the 1,500 meters at the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships on Wednesday and Thursday in Richmond, Va.

Katella’s Cortney Stafford, a state finalist in the triple jump, signed with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, said Mike Cochrane, Katella’s athletic director.

Stafford, who qualified for state with a third-place finish at the Southern Section Masters meet May 25, was voted the top girls’ track and field athlete in the Empire League the last two seasons.

Cochrane also announced he was stepping down as head cross-country coach of the boys’ and girls’ team so he can devote more time to his duties as athletic director. Mike Moreno, a 1994 Katella graduate and an assistant under Cochrane last season, will assume head coaching duties.

FIGURE SKATING

Laguna Niguel’s Sasha Cohen will give a special exhibition during the Orange County Figure Skating Club’s competition this Saturday and Sunday at the Ice Chalet in Aliso Viejo.

Cohen, the 2000 U.S. Nationals runner-up, will perform at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Competition will be held from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on Sunday. General admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 6-12 and free for senior citizens and children under 6.
