Art Show

“Illustration West 39,” the largest juried illustration competition west of New York, opens Friday in Northridge. Sponsored by the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, the competition features entries from national and international artists in such categories as advertising, entertainment, editorial, book, instructional, black and white, unpublished/self-promotional and student.

Gospel Music

Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Gospel Celebration will feature concerts by singer Donnie McClurkin and Kurt Carr and the Kurt Carr Singers, Saturday in Valencia. Donnie McClurkin will perform at 6 and 8 p.m. and Kurt Carr and the Kurt Carr Singers will perform at 1 and 3 p.m. All concerts are in the Golden Bear Theatre. Concert goers must buy $1 concert tickets in addition to the regular park admission price.

Juneteenth Celebration

The Autry Museum of Western Heritage will have a Juneteenth Celebration all day Saturday with live music, film screenings, readings and a genealogy workshop. Howard Marshall Jr., Allen Lee and Mike Mann and the Nightriders are among the performers scheduled to appear. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when U.S. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston Bay and liberated the slaves in Texas. This was more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

Traditional Jazz

The Glendale Kiwanis Traditional Jazz and Big Band Festival, featuring 12 hours of music by 13 different bands, happens Saturday in Glendale.
