Man Convicted in Road Rage Dog Killing

Share

Re “Jury Convicts Man Who Hurled Dog Into Traffic,” June 20: I was an animal control officer for several years in a rural town in the Southeast and we euthanized literally hundreds of puppies and kittens each week. I know firsthand how humans can abuse and disregard defenseless creatures.

Andrew Burnett should get the maximum sentence for his actions. He should count his blessings; had he thrown my dog into traffic, his trial would have been right then and there. I definitely consider my pets as part of my family and would defend them as I would a child.

In my opinion, there are only two ways to make a difference concerning domesticated animals: Spay/neuter and enact vigorous and punishing laws to combat dog-fighting and breeding for profit.

I don’t think that there is any news in the story of the man who threw the dog into traffic and killed it. I think the news lies in the fact that a young girl stabbed her baby to death with scissors and got probation (“Teen Mother Won’t Serve Prison Time for Killing Newborn,” May 23) but a man who kills a dog might get three years in prison. Something is terribly wrong here. What kind of society is this, where there is more jail time attached to killing a dog than killing a human being? May God have mercy on us!
