U.S. Ties Ukraine, Advances in Under-20s

The United States advanced to the second round of the FIFA World Youth Championship, despite giving up a goal in the final minute Saturday and tying Ukraine, 1-1, at Mendoza, Argentina.

Kenny Arena, the son of U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena, put the Americans ahead in the 39th minute, but Denis Stoyan tied it in the 90th minute on a 40-yard free kick off the hands of goalkeeper DJ Countess.

The U.S. (1-1-1) advanced with a second-place finish behind Ukraine (1-0-2) in Group C because last-place Chile (1-2) upset China, 1-0, in the second game of the doubleheader. China also finished 1-1-1, but the Americans had a better goal difference.

In other games: Argentina defeated Jamaica, 5-1, and Egypt defeated Finland, 2-1, in Group A; Brazil defeated Canada, 2-0, and Germany got past Iraq, 3-1 in Group B.

In Major League Soccer:

San Jose 2, Kansas City 0--Goalie Joe Cannon earned his fifth shutout as the Earthquakes defeated the Wizards to extend their unbeaten streak to 11 games before 8,917 at San Jose.

Dwayne DeRosario and Ronald Cerritos scored for the Earthquakes, who lead the Galaxy by three points in the Western Division. San Jose (8-2-4) is 7-0-4 since losing to Miami on April 21.

Cannon, who has not given up a goal in 221 minutes, sent Kansas City (5-8-1) to its fourth consecutive loss.

Chicago 1, New England 1--Dema Kovalenko scored in the 73rd minute and helped the Fire (6-3-3) salvage a tie with the Revolution (4-7-3) in front of 20,531 at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

Tampa Bay 3, D.C. United 2--Eric Quill set up three first-half goals to lead the Mutiny (3-10-1) to a victory over the United (5-8-1) before 9,232 at Tampa, Fla.

Columbus 2, Dallas 1--Brian West scored in the 54th minute to lead the Crew (4-4-4) to a victory over the Burn (6-6-1) before 10,490 at Dallas.
