Badminton Competition Begins in Orange

Four top-seeded singles players from the Southland and one top-seeded doubles team advanced during the first day of U.S. Junior National Badminton Championships in Orange.

In the under-22 girls’ singles division, Elie Wu of Alhambra defeated Stephanie Mell of Addison, Ill., 7-1, 7-0, 7-0. In under-19 boys’ singles, Eric Go of Orange defeated Tim Fitch of Grand Terrace, Calif., 7-1, 7-1, 7-1. In under-17 boys’ singles, Nicholas Jinadasa of Long Beach defeated Justin Hsia of Palo Alto, 7-0, 7-0, 7-1. In under-15 girls, Samantha Jinadasa of Long Beach defeated Stephanie Dulinskas of Palos Heights, Ill., 7-0, 7-0, 7-0.

In under-22 boys’ doubles, Mike Chansawangbuvana and Bob Malaythong of Orange defeated Mao Hsiao of San Bruno, Calif. and Winata Lay of Rocklin, Calif., 7-2, 7-3, 7-5.
