Kushner’s Rahman Claim Denied

A U.S. District Court judge in New York upheld heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman’s right to switch promoters, from Cedric Kushner to Don King.

Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum ruled Kushner had not proven the King contract violated an extension provision in Kushner’s contract with Rahman.

But, in her written decision, Cedarbaum did grant Kushner the right to a portion of the promotional fee from Rahman’s next fight, a rematch against Lennox Lewis, whom Rahman knocked out in April to capture the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council heavyweight titles.

“He’s the champion and he wanted to be free of Kushner, which is what he got,” Rahman’s attorney, Michael Armstrong, told the Associated Press.

Kushner’s attorney, Richard Edlin, tried to downplay King’s victory, emphasizing that Kushner would share in the profits of Rahman-Lewis II.

“In my view, King’s working for us,” Edlin said.
