Preserving L.A.’s Past
* At last! Some hopeful news regarding the fate of a Los Angeles architectural treasure--the Van de Kamp’s bakery building in Glassell Park (“Bakery Could Become New Home for College Classes,” March 5). The preservation of the facade and its incorporation into an educational facility is a wonderful solution, as it instills a sense of history and culture to a facility where young minds are being nurtured.
Developers spend millions of dollars creating “historical” look-alikes to lure people in (e.g., Universal City Walk, Downtown Disney, California Adventure), while all around us, real bits of L.A. history slip away.
Kudos to the forward-thinking folks who will work to preserve this structure that has caught my eye and made me smile for more than a quarter-century.
