When Floyd North buried a 15-foot jump shot with one second to play, it capped one of the most remarkable comebacks in St. Augustine High history.

Rallying from 15 points down in the third quarter and a 10-point deficit with only two minutes remaining, the Saints scored a 72-70 victory over Notre Dame on Tuesday night in the first round of the Southern Regional Division III playoffs at Coronado High.

“I was just thinking up and out . . . get the ball up and follow through,” North said.

Cody Pearson had 30 points for Notre Dame (23-7) and Michael Luderer added 20.

But the Knights were unable to maintain control the final two minutes when the partisan crowd got behind St. Augustine (22-6), which plays Thursday night in the semifinals at Rancho Bernardo High.

North scored 30 points and Eric Osmundson, who had 20 points, triggered the comeback, hitting two free throws and then a three-pointer that pulled St. Augustine to within 70-65 with 1:05 to play.

As Notre Dame desperately tried to drain the clock, Rommel Marentez stole the ball and converted a layup and a free throw.

Osmundson tied the score on a perfectly executed inbounds play and Notre Dame was whistled for a five-second violation.

St. Augustine wasted no time under its own basket, getting the ball to North, who quickly got off the winner.
